Now, I am no expert, but I know more things about SEO now, more than I did 2 months ago. What is SEO, anyway? SEO or Search Engine Optimization is the process of improving the quality of traffic to your website from search engines.

For example, Lisa wants to know how to edit a video, and you happen to have a tutorial about it, Editing A Video. Now, all Lisa has to do is login Google and find you. Out of the thousand search engine results, how is she going to land on your tutorial if you’re on the 221st page?

First of all, search engines must know you exist. The first thing you have to do is submit your website to different directories. You can start by adding your website to DMOZ, one of the free open directories out there. Submitting your website to all the major search engines is not enough, though, you still need to do some tweaking on your pages to let Google notice you.

Here are a few SEO tips:

Optimize your website title
Your website title must not contain more than 60 characters. As much as possible, your website title must be relevant to your web pages, so that search engines can find you easily.

Use meta tags (description and keywords):
These are information embedded on the <head> tags area of your web pages. Now, this is not a magical solution, it only helps search engine crawlers know what your web page is all about. It is important to write a short but concise description of your website, as well as using keywords that are relevant to your pages.

Find the best keywords:
Targeted keywords must appear at least 2-3 times in the body of each page. Keywords on the meta tags does not have to be more than 10, SEO would work if the keywords used are correct and relevant to each page. If you can, use the <strong> tag for a keyword. Bold words shout keywords.

Optimize your content per page
Make sure that each web page contains at least 200 words or more. If a page only contains a sentence or a picture, search engine crawlers will just skip it.

Place the “alt” attribute on images
This is the simplest thing that you can do. Make sure that the alt text is related to the picture. Example, dolphin.jpg must have alt=”dolphin”

Link Exposure
Avoid doing reciprocal links, as much as possible have other websites link to you. The more links pointing to your website, the better your chances to be found.

Create a sitemap
Not only would this help your visitors find everything on your website, this also helps search engines crawlers pick up all the data that you have in your website on one sweep.

Linking
Do not use more than 100 text links on one page.

Now, there are a lot of techniques on how to improve your website ranking, and the ones I shared with you are just some of the basics. I will be writing more in the future, so if you want any updates, please feel free to subscribe to my feed or through email.

Valentine’s Day has become a very commercialized occasion. Come February, all the stores at the malls are offering discounts; flowers becomes an overpriced entity; and eating lots of chocolates is an excuse to skip your diet. Some people find this day very stressful, but, I’ve survived a lot of this day for years.

Here are a few tips on how to survive Valentine’s Day:

If you’re single,

…and bitter, let the people around you, like your family and friends, that you don’t need reminding that you are alone and not in love with anyone. This keeps them from sending you those love messages expressing how this day should be about being in love. When in fact, they could just say, “I love you”, for being a good son/daughter, for being a great friend and for being you.

Make this day a reminder that, love is not just about being in love. It is also about loving yourself more. Don’t go on a date just because you don’t want to be that person who is dateless among your peers. Make this day a time to reflect and evaluate where you are in your life, and whatever your hangups are with your past relationship, leave it there. Move on. Be ready to be loved again, even if it’s not today or tomorrow, but in the future when you are fully ready.

Treat this day as you would other days. Do your daily routines; go to work/school, do your grocery, maybe. But if you can’t, then, ask all your single friends to party with you and celebrate being in love with life.

Spend this day with those you love the most. When I was single, I celebrated this day with my family. I cooked for them a hearty feast, and we all had the funnest day ever.

If you’re attched…

Don’t let this day define your relationship. Remember, there are 364 more days to be in love. Spending your money to eat dinner out on a fancy restaurant is impractical in my opinion. As long as you’re together, whatever day of the year, it should make you feel loved and special.

Don’t get each other the usual gifts. Cards? Teddy bears? Chocolates? Find something that your partner will truly like; something that he/she would really use. I personally do not like getting flowers, for it wilts overtime. I don’t like teddy bears, either; they’re cute, yes, but it ends there. Chocolates? Well, I won’t argue with you if it’s Butterfinger

If you plan on going on a date, do it on another day. Like I said, it shouldn’t be squeezed in that single day. The day won’t be that special if everyone else is celebrating and doing the same thing as you.

Love is such a powerful feeling. Don’t let love stir you into doing crazy things on Valentine’s day. Family-love, friend-love, or self-love is still love in itself.
