How To Do SEO
Now, I am no expert, but I know more things about SEO now, more than I did 2 months ago. What is SEO, anyway? SEO or Search Engine Optimization is the process of improving the quality of traffic to your website from search engines.
For example, Lisa wants to know how to edit a video, and you happen to have a tutorial about it, Editing A Video. Now, all Lisa has to do is login Google and find you. Out of the thousand search engine results, how is she going to land on your tutorial if you’re on the 221st page?
First of all, search engines must know you exist. The first thing you have to do is submit your website to different directories. You can start by adding your website to DMOZ, one of the free open directories out there. Submitting your website to all the major search engines is not enough, though, you still need to do some tweaking on your pages to let Google notice you.
Here are a few SEO tips:
Optimize your website title
Your website title must not contain more than 60 characters. As much as possible, your website title must be relevant to your web pages, so that search engines can find you easily.
Use meta tags (description and keywords):
These are information embedded on the <head> tags area of your web pages. Now, this is not a magical solution, it only helps search engine crawlers know what your web page is all about. It is important to write a short but concise description of your website, as well as using keywords that are relevant to your pages.
Find the best keywords:
Targeted keywords must appear at least 2-3 times in the body of each page. Keywords on the meta tags does not have to be more than 10, SEO would work if the keywords used are correct and relevant to each page. If you can, use the <strong> tag for a keyword. Bold words shout keywords.
Optimize your content per page
Make sure that each web page contains at least 200 words or more. If a page only contains a sentence or a picture, search engine crawlers will just skip it.
Place the “alt” attribute on images
This is the simplest thing that you can do. Make sure that the alt text is related to the picture. Example, dolphin.jpg must have alt=”dolphin”
Link Exposure
Avoid doing reciprocal links, as much as possible have other websites link to you. The more links pointing to your website, the better your chances to be found.
Create a sitemap
Not only would this help your visitors find everything on your website, this also helps search engines crawlers pick up all the data that you have in your website on one sweep.
Linking
Do not use more than 100 text links on one page.
Now, there are a lot of techniques on how to improve your website ranking, and the ones I shared with you are just some of the basics. I will be writing more in the future, so if you want any updates, please feel free to subscribe to my feed or through email.
